THE CONFERENCE
Introduction The peculiarities of the Orchidaceae in terms of evolutionary patterns, ecological plasticity, pollination strategies, and inter-organismic relationships, have long attracted the attention of scientist, and have been uses to explain the astonishing diversity of the family. Since the time of Darwin, and interrupted flow of scientific works, investigation, and hypotheses made orchid biology one of the more in-depth studied and conceptually rewarding subjects in botany. Nevertheless, what makes orchids so special in the plant kingdom is not only their extraordinary natural history, but also the profound cultural and artistic link that has emerged in both ancient and modern societies with this group of flowering plants. Few other plant families have received such a broad and general appreciation by humans as orchids. This fascination is well reflected in the amount of past and present explorers, botanists, and researcher institutions, growers, artists and photographers, editors, authors, specialized horticultural and conservation societies, scientist and technicians, curators of an increasing number of dedicated web pages, devoted aficionados, business men, and everyone else who earns a living across the world exclusively from orchids. To celebrate the “human factor” in orchidology, the University of Costa Rica organizes the 1 st Lankester International Lectures Series devoted to The Human History of Orchids . The goal of the lectures is to underline the importance of single figures, groups, and institutions, which made significant contribution to our knowledge, understanding, appreciation, use and conservation of orchids. The lectures will focus on four main topics: Knowing orchids (exploration and geography), Understanding Orchids (science and documentation), Appreciation orchids (art, journal and books, private and commercial collections), and Using and Conserving orchids . During the meeting, renown scientists will be presented the Lankester Award on Orchid Science” and the first nominees to the “Lankester Award on Orchid Art2 will be unveiled. Authors interested in presenting lecture are encouraged to contact the scientific coordinator of the Lectures Series, Franco Pupulin, to submit the proposals.
The location The new building of the Center of Research and Training in Public Administration, CICAP for its acronym in Spanish, was finished in 2012. It was the restyling of an old building in order to feel the need for a structure with the capacity to provide the best environment for training. The final result was an architectural piece, which is now at the your disposition for this congress. We uploaded a map, with the surroundings of the University campus; hopefully it will help you to locate the most important points nearby. Access it by clicking here.
